A U.S. Marine guard who answered the phone at the Embassy would not provide any information. In Washington, the State Department said it had no immediate information and was looking into news reports of the attack.

So apprantly they hit the embassy (why am I not surpriseed)
One death is confirmed (a syrian gaurd). No word yet on any other causlties.
I know little more than what I am getting off CNN right this second (yes, CNN.) Som how I am not surprised by this. Its's not the first time Damascus has been attacked this year. These are more of a "scare tactic" attack. Very small and really only meant to jump start our hearts minds and guts. I'll update more when I hear more.

Update: There were four men who had attempted to invade the embassy when the gun fire began

September 11th 5 years later

Wow! It's been 5 years, 5 freaking years. And as everyone keeps saying, it really does seem like it just happens. It seems like just this morning I was in the car going to school and my mom turned to me and said "A plane just crashed into the world trade center" At first I figured "So, planes tend to crash" (Boy that really helps my fear) I can still see the look on my teachers faces as they tuned into the tv. My math teacher never looked away from his.
I still remember going to the mall and seeing kiosks selling "we will never forget" pins. And on the bridge of the Ronald Reagan free way I can still remember the brightly colored American flag place there just after the attacks. I had never seen a grown man cry and then I saw several. I broke up with my boyfriend the night before yet it all seemed so trivial by the end of the next day.
I still feel the hands of the people in the prayer circles at church and school and remember being choked up when my church showed clips.
I know I didn't know anyone and I wont pretend it affected me badly. But still, it was (and is) my country.
Though it's been 5 years and his approval rating has dropped down nearly 60 points, I still have respect for our president (though it has wavered, especially right before the start of the Iraq war) Though I may not support all the things he does I do feel much safer under his administration.Tomorrow we will all be back to normal like we where the last 4 anniversaries. 9/11 will become a mere mention in speeches made by or against other politicians but we will for the most part forget until the next anniversary rolls around.

Dedicated to William X Wren (the retired fire fighter who risked his life on September 11th to save others. The ruling cleared the way for Clarence Ray Allen -- legally blind, nearly deaf and in a wheelchair -- to be executed by injection early Tuesday for a triple murder he ordered from behind bars to silence witnesses to another killing.

I don't care how old he is, he killed four people. Who really cares what you call Christmas. It's just a holiday. How come every year we need to have annoying whiners on both sides of the political spectrum (yes this includes you too Mr. O'Rielly) complaing argueing about what to or not to call "this holiday." This Holiday we speak of is Christmas lets leave it at that. It isn't offensive to anyone it is just a name. But department stores are getting politically correct (as usual) with the whole "Happy Holidays" thing. This problem isn't with the word "Holidays" itself (it's actually a good idea as it incorprates all the holidays in one line instead of writing out "Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah..." it's a good time saver) The problem is the stores that try to stay away from "Christmas" and only sell Christmas stuff (I'm looking at you Target) If you are trying to include everyone then sell more than just trees and nativity mangers and plastic santas. Otherwise you are not being incorperating all holidays (and no a small shelve full of Manorahs does not count as "Channukah stuff")
If all your store sells is Christmas junk then say "Merry Christmas" if not say "Happy Holidays" as for people and advertisers I really don't care what they "wish me" if they say "Merry Christmas" that's great if they say "Happy Holidays" even better.
Everyone knows what Christmas is and it's not really a religious holiday anymore (It's a pagan holiday and actually some believe Jesus was born in the spring)it's more commercialized than anything else. Also it's a federal holiday. So stop getting so offended and enjoy your day off of work!

The Top four! This suggests that he may have tried to take others with him.

Of course I would not cry "foul play" until authorities confirm it. It is equally possible that Joel was a lonely guy who wanted to blow himself up but also wanted attention so he did it next to a stadium. And the reason he looked suspicious when he went to buy the fertilizer is because he knew he was about to blow himself up.

In other news Oswald admits "Kennedy assasinates was a cruel joke gone horrible wrong"

Hinckley's therapist says he's normal

Yep, just your normal everyday guy who tries to kill the leader of the free world in hopes of impressing Jodi Foster. There are still some "We remember" bumper stickers on peoples cars and "Never forget" pins on peoples shirts. But most of it is gone. The patriotism hasn't left America though it seems like it has. Every year we remember less and less. We have forgotten what we are fighting for. It's nice to know America is getting back to normal. Good things are happining today. There was a beach baptism at church and the Simpsons premires tonight. All signs (at least to me) that we are deffinatly healing. But even though we don't need to be in mourning we still should never forget.
I don't think we will have another big attack here in America (at least not while Bush or his administration is in office) I think we are doing enough to prevent a huge attack. There is no doubt that there are people out there still who would like nothing more than to distroy America. But for right now I feel we are safe (hey, we just foiled an attack on California)

Hurricane Katrina

Watching TV from my home in California it is hard to believe that what looks like a 3rd world country is actually the gulf cost of this United States. It looks really bad. MS LA and AL almost do look like a nuclear attack. What's not underwater in New Orleans seems to be on fire. Yesterday I was watching fox they were filming a building fire. It looked like a melting candle.
Unfortunately do to the lack of water pressure there wasn't much the fire department could do and in the end the building collapsed. However things have taken a brighter turn. More troops have come into the cities and are clearing people out. The last 300 people in the Superdome have been airlifted to shelters. Things arn't better yet but as bad as they were even 24 hrs ago they seem to be much better now.

Notice how things got better one day after the president arrived?

They say the death toll is supposedly in the thousands. However the media tends to catastrophize just about everything. I do not see the death toll raising above more than maybe 200 or 300. I find it pretty unlikely that the death toll in New Orleans is anywhere near 10,000 like Senator Vitter seems to claim it is. I'm not there so I could be wrong. I hope I'm not.

What we need right now is a leader like Giuliani was during 9/11. Right now there really isn't one. The mayors and governors need to stop crying and at least one of them needs to step up to the plate and be in charge.

When I pick my jaw up off the floor I would like to shake your hand

What can I say? I am amazed. Mr. Keith Olberman has done a report that is not only useful but intelligent and correct. He did a report about quitting smoking cold turkey. He explained how quickly you can recover if you just quit now and how it is more beneficial than joining a group and other stuff. What he said was really smart and most likely all true. I'm not a smoker but if I had been I would quit right now.
Mr. Olberman I never thought I'd see the day when I agreed with you whole heartedly. I realize you are a grieving mother and you are exercising your freedom of speech. But it needs to stop. It is very sad when any soldier dies, but we are at war and this is what happens. You can’t honestly say that you never thought of the possibility of your son dying too when he went to war.
The president knows what he is doing so does the rest of his cabinet. They are trying to protect America from more deadly attacks not kill a whole bunch of sons and daughters.
The president has already heard what you have to say and has commented on it. Don’t think he is too sacred to talk to you because he most certainly is not. He should not have to talk to you. For one thing if he talks to you he will have to talk to everyone else and he has a job he needs to do, he can’t talk to everyone and he won’t. Also even if he did decide to speak to you, what would that prove? You would never be satisfied with his answers, whether they are right or wrong. Casey was a hero and America is grateful for his service in Iraq now please pack up your bags and go home.

I would rather let one innocent man die than let a thousand guilty men go free

I don't know who said this. I think this is from the Simpson’s and the real quote goes something like "I would rather let one thousand guilty men go free than let an innocent man die" But I like Chief Wiggum's version better.

I see nothing wrong with Britain’s "Shoot to kill" policy. As sad and unfortunate as the mans death is I do not think there needs to be a change in the system. Sure Menezes was innocent but suppose he wasn't and we let him go. You’d all be whistling a different tune. Sure you may be thinking "Well you could say that about anyone" and that's pretty much true. However Menezes looked suspicious. He looked Middle Eastern (and before you yell at me for racial profiling keep in mind the terrorists were from the Middle East). He was wearing a bulky jacket (which could have contained explosives) and when he saw the cops he started running.
Yes looks can be deceiving and in this case they unfortunately were. But should London now decide "No, I know he looks suspicious but let’s see what he is going to do first." Had they done that with a real terrorist there might have been trouble.
I don't know maybe London could just adopt the shoot to injure policy. That should make at least some people happy.
You may think I seem a little harsh and cruel. I'm not. I do not condone this mans death, yet I don't feel London's policy should change either.

London attacked 07-07-05

This morning, July 7th 2005 London, England was attacked by terrorists who bombed six transit systems and one bus, killing 37 people and injuring more than 700.

True September 11th was worse in the way of impact and deaths. But this is not about who's attack was worse it is about terrorism. Are we doing enough? Apparently terrorists had threatened to attack transit systems before and several attempts had been thwarted too.

This is (I believe) an attempt by Al Queda to get England to pull out of Iraq and stop supporting us. It is what happened after Madrid was bombed. But England unlike Spain is strong in their alliance with America and I do not think they will back down. Tony Blair is an excellent prime minister and a strong man. He will get his country through this and they I thing will come out even stronger than before.

The real irony is when it occurred. Just yesterday the people of London were celebrating winning the chance to host the Olympics in 2012. Just 12 hours after a day of celebrating they where met with a day of tragedy.

On a side note: I was watching MSNBC (yes I watch them) and as they usually do before a commercial, they zoomed into a clock. The clock said:
9:11
London

We are still fighting terrorism and now we need to fight harder. But as president Bush said in October of 2001 "We will not waver. We will not tire. We will not faulter. We will not fail. Peace and freedom will prevail."

Live 8 concert

I think for once I share many others views on this. While I think raising awareness is a good idea, it really only works when the world is NOT already aware. We have been hearing about hunger, poverty, and disease in Africa since we where kids. We already have a program that spreads awareness it's called "feed the children" and it plays constantly.
The people watching the concert where most likely plenty aware. The good thing about this concert was rththat it incouraged people to open their pocket books. But my guess is that for many of them, if they have not opened their pocket books to Africa before, they are certiantly not going to do it now.
We know the cliche "moeny can't buy...." Well in this case (as well as I believe, many others) money would have helped do a lot more. There were 10,000 people in the audience if they charged $2 a ticket most of the 10,000 would have paid it. $20,000 does much more for Africa than awareness most of us already have will do.
Otherwise to me it seems like more of a publicity stunt. Sure Bono was doing it for the awareness, but not all celebrities are like Bono.
Plus Madonna cursing and flipping people off doesnt much help anyones case.

I wish to apologize for the lack of updates. Obviously people are mad.
I say next time this idiot decides to be artistic and recreate national tragedy; He should forget the safety harness.

UNBEFREAKINGLEIVABLE!

So Wacko Jacko gets cut some slacko....

Michael Jackson Acquitted of All Charges
AP via Yahoo! You seemed so impatient and uncomfortable on David Letterman. He was making jokes like he always does. You were acting way to defensive.

Dear Tom Cruz: If this is a publicity stunt I really don't get it. You’re in two completely different movies that are competing at the box office and your both already famous. I'd be scratching my head on this one if I actually cared.

Dear Russell Crowe: I understand that you where frustrated but throwing a phone (even if you didn't mean to hit the guy) is still not ok. Going on Letterman and pulling a Hugh Grant is not going to help you case. Remember just like Grant on Leno the only one it helps are the hosts and their ratings.

Dear Rosie O'Donnell: Please for the love of God just shut up! Stop attacking Shawn Hannity....who clearly knows more than you...with "facts" and opinions you can't even back up. Do some research hun. And by research I don't mean watching Michael Moore’s film Fahrenheit 9/11 or listening to anything Barbra Streisand says...ever!

Dear Lindsey Lohan: All I have to say to you is, it comes with the package hun. You don't like it, leave.

Dear Barbra Walters: See what happens when you don't watch what you say. People go crazy and protest on your studio lawn. Though I got to say I partly agree with you on this one.

Dear Michael Jackson, Michaels fans, and the millions of protestors out there: Look I am a huge fan too I think Michael is very talented and has some of the greatest songs ever recorded. But he is also crazy. But the fact that he is talented, formally black, and has a monkey isn’t what makes him a child molester. The fact that he molested a child makes him a child molester!

Update

I know earlier i said that the spelling bee was stupid. Mark Felt stepped forward Tuesday as Deep Throat, the secret Washington Post source that helped bring down President Nixon during the Watergate scandal.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
But why step forward now? You know there are going to be tons of conspiracy theories on this one (of course...its America.) Was he bitter at the president? Probably. Maybe he just saw something wrong and decided the president should not be getting away with it. I have no idea. Honestly I never cared too much about the Watergate scandal as it happened 9 years before I was born. Do I think this guy is a hero? Heck no. But he wasn't necessarily bad. He leaked information to the media about one of the greatest American political scandals. Would Nixon have gotten away with it had Felt not leaked information. Probably, the media was not as big in those days as it is now. We didn't pry as much as we do now.

So let’s see South Korea applauded Bush, Iraq is afraid we may leave to soon, and Deep Throat has stepped out of the shadows. Is this a sign of the apocalypse?....no.

In other news we recently dug up grants tomb, turns out Jimmy Hoffa is buried in Grants tomb and in his pocket....a folded up map of president Kennedy’s motorcade route. (That’s a joke I don't want any angry letters)

The real question is; how does this stupid headline make the news:

51 Contestants Left in National Spelling Bee
Fox News - Jun 02 2:40 AM51 contestants remain standing in the 78th annual Scripps National Spelling Bee.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
51? thats alot of people left. It aint even close to intense yet. Granted it has been cut from 273. But 51 is still a large number. I mean American Idol didn't annouce it had "only 51 contestants left." Granted thats a stupid show on fox and this is a spelling bee. I'm just saying at 51 people thats not really news.

Theres no crying in baseball!

...but there is in the senate

Weepy Voinovich Begs for 'No' Vote on Bolton
Crosswalk.com - May 26 2:48 AM(CNSNews.com) - The thought that John Bolton might be confirmed as the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations brought one Republican senator to the brink of tears on Wednesday.

''I'm afraid that when we go to the [Senate] well, that too many of my colleagues -- (voice breaking) -- that too many of my colleagues are not going to understand that this appointment is very, very important to our country," Voinovich said.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wow, is this guy nuts! Ladies and gentlemen, we just witnessed a man shoot himself in the foot politically. I can understand crying over some tragic event like 9/11, maybe even the Shaivo case. But the senate hearing on the nomination of Richard Bolton as the U.N ambassador? WOW! He is clearly an unstable man (hate to think how he would react if he is ever pulled over for something) and he is running for another term. Boy did he ever give his opponent a softball. If anything is going to ruin your chances of winning an election it's crying! It's like when Edmund Muskie started crying after the newspaper reports about his wife. That killed his chances of winning the 1972 primary's. I hate when people use emotion to get a point across. When will people understand it doesn’t help you, it hurts you.

One thing I'd like to see though is George Voinovich debating Zell Miller (Democratic senator from Georgia who gave a speech at the republican national convention basically yelling about his support for Bush...then went on Chris Mathews and challenged him to a dual....I love this guy)

Week in Review

For my first post I will do a week in review with just a few stories from last week. I am not sure whether or not this will be my regular fortmat.

Top story:
U.S. military condemns photos of Saddam Hussein in his underwear
Haaretz Daily - May 21 12:46 AMBAGHDAD, Iraq - The U.S. military condemned the publication of photographs showing an imprisoned Saddam Hussein naked except for his white underwear, and ordered an investigation of how the pictures were leaked to a tabloid.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You probably already know about this and the issue at newsweek (they recently retracted an article about U.S soldiers flushing a qu'ran down the toilet)

Personally, I do not have a problem with the pictures or the qu'ran story. My problem is the effect they have on us. Newsweek’s story and the Saddam photos which appeared in "The Sun" and "The New York Post" are a deliberate attempt to make the Bush administration (as well as the rest of America) look bad. And it's apparently working. Now people look at the photos of Saddam and say "look how horribly we're treating him, America is horrible." Now I have seen these pictures. Saddam looks very clean and well groomed (much better than he did when we captured him) Basically we have taken good care of him. We are treating him diplomatically. I think we are being too nice to him, but that's just me.
Stupid comment from the lovely Huffington post: "This is Rupert Murdochs fault" "both papers are owned by Rupert Murdoch."
Whether or not this is true (I'll admit now I don't know if he does or doesn’t own the two papers.) He would not submit those pictures. Both papers are highly liberal and Murdoch is a conservative. Why would he submit pictures to a liberal paper if he knows it's just going to hurt the American image more?
As for Newsweek, Their hatred for the Bush administration is the reason 16 soldiers were killed. Granted I do think that some people take religion to seriously and Newsweek can't be held fully responsible for the rioter’s actions. That being said Newsweek should really be more careful from whom they take their anonymous tips (which they said they would do) especially during war time. Afghanistan reacts violently to just about anything American's do. Let’s not forget what happened last time Afghanistan got mad at us. Newsweek's anti Bush stories aren’t hurting the administration they are hurting America.

Donald Trump offers to rebuild World Trade Center twin towers
Channel NewsAsia - May 18 5:28 PMNEW YORK : New York property tycoon Donald Trump unveiled his design Wednesday for "bigger, stronger and better" twin towers to replace the World Trade Center originals destroyed on September 11, 2001.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I can’t believe it. For once I actually agree with “The Donald”. The freedom towers are a stupid idea. As great as it sounds to commemorate the victims with a "freedom tower" which stands 1776 feet high it is not a design I would choose. First off only 70 floors would be used as office space while the remaining 276 feet will just sit at the top like an abnormally large observation deck. Yes I agree there should be an observation deck but I don't think we need to waste space. I actually like the idea I heard of Keith Olberman which was to rebuild them making the second tower 2,896 inches smaller (one inch for each person who died.) This new tower is just going to look stupid.

That’s really all I can think of for last week (though I know there is more) Maybe I'll update later I'm not sure yet.
